An interesting Japanese traditional festival is coming soon in Kyoto.
It is called the Gion Festival ( 祇園祭), and it has more than 1000 years of history in Kyoto. This festival is held for the whole month of July.
The highlight of festival is the famous parade called Yamaboko-junko(山鉾巡行). It is a procession by 33 traditional wooden floats on the streets of Kyoto. This is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
In Heian period (794-1185), Japan was affected by the epidemic. In order to protect people from the plague, people prayed with 66 long handed Chinese spears (矛=Hoko). This number, 66, is actually same number of countries in Japan at that time.
During this festival, particularly, from 14th to 17th July, a variety of street stalls will be set up. So, you can also feel the lively and typical mood of Japanese summer festival.
